He lifted the blanket expecting to find proof his pregnant wife had betrayed him. Instead

Lucas stood frozen, his heart pounding as the elevator doors opened to reveal his mother, Margaret Bennett, and cousin Richard. The sleek, polished lobby of their apartment building suddenly felt like a trap. Richard held a folder in his hands, a smug smile playing at the corners of his mouth.

“Lucas,” Margaret said, her voice smooth yet icy. She looked past him to Emma, who was being wheeled out on a stretcher, pale and trembling. “What’s all this commotion?”

“It’s Emma,” Lucas replied, keeping his voice steady. “She needs to get to the hospital. Now.”

Margaret’s eyes flicked to Emma’s swollen legs, and a flash of something—pity, perhaps—crossed her face. “I told you she was delicate,” she said softly, as if it was a foregone conclusion that Emma had brought this upon herself.

But Lucas had no time for games. “Richard, what’s in the folder?” he demanded, pointing at the documents his cousin held with a shaking hand.

“Just some papers, Lucas,” Richard replied smoothly. “Nothing for you to worry about right now.”

“Did you forge my signature?” Lucas asked, his voice rising with anger. “Did you sign documents in my name?”

Richard’s smile didn’t falter. “Lucas, you really should calm down. We’ll discuss this later.”

Emma squeezed Lucas’s hand again from the stretcher. “Please, Lucas,” she whispered, eyes wide with fear.

The paramedics resumed moving, and Lucas walked beside Emma, refusing to let go of her hand. “We’re going to the hospital, and we’ll sort everything out there,” he said firmly, glaring at Richard.

As they reached the ambulance, Richard stepped closer, lowering his voice so only Lucas could hear. “You know your family wants what’s best for you, right?” he said quietly. “We’ll make sure everything is taken care of. You just need to trust us.”

Lucas shook his head, his heart aching with betrayal. “I trusted you,” he replied, his voice filled with hurt. “And you used it against my wife.”

The paramedics lifted Emma into the ambulance, and Lucas climbed in beside her, ignoring his mother’s and Richard’s protests.

As the ambulance doors closed, Lucas took a deep breath, adrenaline coursing through his veins. He felt Emma’s trembling fingers in his, and he knew they were in this battle together. He would fight for Emma, for their baby, and for the truth.

The ride to the hospital was a blur of flashing lights and sirens, but Lucas tried to stay focused. He needed answers, and he would not rest until he had them.

Upon arrival, Emma was whisked away for immediate care, leaving Lucas to pace the waiting room, his mind racing with thoughts of betrayal and family deceit. The hospital’s fluorescent lights cast a cold glow, but Lucas was determined to bring the truth to light.

As he waited, Lucas thought of the life growing inside Emma, of the nursery waiting at home, and of the promises he had made. He vowed to protect his family, no matter the cost.

Lucas knew this was just the beginning of a larger battle. His family had orchestrated a silent war, but they had underestimated Emma’s strength and his resolve. They would not win.
